I have to admit- I feel a little guilty today, sitting in my nice warm house sipping coffee while others are outside plowing runways and re-routing air traffic.
Winter storms are causing significant problems for airports across the country today. A large storm system has caused numerous storm warnings and even tornados throughout the south. Blizzards and blowing snow are making travel difficult in places like Oklahoma and Arkansas, while Illinois and Indiana are seeing lots of snow along with freezing rain.
The good news is that it's a white Christmas for many of us! The bad news is that all of this snow means long hours for others, like airfield maintenance personnel and airline operations staff, who are being called in to work on Christmas day to try to minimize the impact of this winter weather on operations.
It's times like this that I'm grateful for emergency response teams, airport managers and staff, along with local city workers, who labor long hours during storms like these to get travelers and aircraft in and out of airports, and sometimes implementing portions of their airport emergency plans to help everyone get through the storms.
I hope that when their shift is done and the storms have passed, that those who were out working today will still get to have some kind of a Christmas!
