Problems continue for Boeing after all of their 787 Dreamliner aircraft were grounded indefinitely earlier this month. Two separate incidents involving the battery compartment this month led to an investigation by the NTSB, FAA and Japanese investigators.
On January 7th, a parked Japan Airlines 787 caught on fire after unloading all of the passengers at the gate. Firefighters spent one and a half hours putting the fire out, and investigators said the battery compartment in the belly of the aircraft was the source.
Then, on January 16th, an ANA flight crew was forced to make an emergency landing after they smelled smoke in the cockpit - the result of a battery fire just below them.
The NTSB is still investigating, but it's clear that the problem is a serious one, and the 787 may not return to service for a long time - possibly not until 2014, according to one Forbes article.
